African-American Vernacular English (AAVE)

Voice Recognition Study

** For clarity, AAVE, also referred to as Black Vernacular, Black English Vernacular (BEV), or Black Vernacular English (BVE), is the variety of English natively spoken, particularly in urban communities, by most working and middle-class African Americans and Black Canadians.**

Project Purpose:  To improve voice recognition on mobile devices for the AAVE-sto peaking community for conversational messaging apps.

In order to improve the technology we need datasets that will train software how people communicate in conversations using voice chat.

You will find another AAVE speaker (can be a spouse, relative, child, friend, etc.) and complete the project together.

Pay for completion:  $50 per participant (that is, $50 for you and $50 for your chosen conversation partner)

Time necessary for completion:  Approximately one hour for the conversation plus 5 - 10 minutes set up time.

Data Use:  Submissions are for technological research only. They are completely anonymous and will not be broadcast publicly at any time.

Client Company:  Appen (www.appen.com)
